Rachel Gordon

About the Artist

Rachel Gordon is a Scottish visual artist currently based in London. She gained her BA in Photography at the London College of Communication, UAL, and holds a MA in Photography with distinction from the Royal College of Art. Recent exhibitions and awards include ‘Sling’, Cell Space, London, ‘Primordial Realms’, Galleria Objets, London, ‘Zygote’, Culterim Gallery, Berlin, GUP Fresh Eyes Talent Award 2023, Haute Photographie Festival, Amsterdam, Shadow Lab Residency Award, 2023, ‘Graduate Show’, Anise Gallery, London, Source Graduate Photography Award, 2023, ‘Photo50: Doing & Undoing Islands’, London Art Fair.

Inspired by Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater's 'Thought Forms,' Gordon transforms the enlarger into a tool for sculpting light and matter, delving into the intangible realm of human emotion through experimental photography. The process, characterized by spontaneity and intuition, mirrors the fluidity and complexity of human emotions. Challenging traditional notions of photography, the artist pushes the boundaries of the medium by working in complete darkness, fostering a deep connection with the materials and the process itself. Each exposure, whether a fleeting moment or an extended duration, becomes a unique imprint on the photographic paper, creating a rich tapestry of forms and colours. The resulting images invite viewers to contemplate their own inner landscapes, encouraging a deeper engagement with the artwork and prompting personal interpretations of the abstract forms. By exploring the intersection of art, science, and spirituality, this body of work offers a contemporary perspective on human consciousness and the power of visual representation.
