Patrick Stratton
About the Artist
Patrick is a multi-disciplinary artist based in London, combining weaving and mechanics. He received his BA in Mathematics and Philosophy from University of Leeds, and his MA in Fine Art from City & Guilds School of Art. He has exhibited widely across the UK, including group shows at San Mei Gallery (2023 & 2024), and helped curate a show with Hypha Studios (2023). He has also exhibited in several international group exhibitions, including with Yes. Baby. in Germany (2023) and in the REA emerging art fair (2021). He has been shortlisted for multiple awards, such as the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize (2021), the Cordis Tapestry Prize (2021), the Start Martin Miller’s Gin Emerging Artist Prize (2022) and was awarded a grant by the Theo Moorman Trust (2024).
Inspired by writers like Samuel Beckett, Stratton elevates everyday moments into playful, existentialist narratives. His series, "Things I Do Sometimes," employs a scientific lens to examine ordinary actions, transforming them into kinetic tapestries. These works, often animated by motors, range from consistently functioning mechanical tapestries to short videos capturing their ephemeral existence. With a simple, pop-art aesthetic, Stratton's work intrigues viewers with its witty exploration of the mundane. By combining textiles and electronics, he brings these ordinary moments to life, inviting contemplation on the nature of existence.
