Ingrid Weyland

About the Artist

Ingrid Weyland is an Argentinian photographer and artist based in Buenos Aires. She studied Graphic Design at the University of Buenos Aires, later dedicating herself to photography. In 2020, she was one of the winners of Decade of Change by 1854 British Journal of Photography and the Exposure Photo Festival in Calgary, and she won the Ashurst Emerging Artist Photography Prize 2021. This same year, she was also a finalist in the Discovery Awards - Encontros da Imagem in Braga, Lens Culture Critics Choice, Fresh Klompching Gallery Exhibition (NY), and won the Rhonda Wilson Award. In 2022, she was shortlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize (UK), Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50, and Juror's Pick in the Lens Culture Art Photography Awards. In 2023, she was the America's winner of the Saatchi Art for Change prize (UK).

Weyland’s “Topographies of Fragility” series focuses on evocative landscapes expressing fragility of the natural environment. She prompts viewers to contemplate deeper environmental issues through her unique artistic approach. Through her lushly coloured photographs of landscapes from different parts of the world—including Argentina, Greenland and Iceland— she highlights the environmental degradation that threatens these pristine environments. By overlaying crumpled paper onto the images, she creates a powerful visual metaphor. Just as a crumpled piece of paper can never fully regain its original shape, so too is the natural world irrevocably altered by human impact. These seemingly pristine landscapes serve as a stark reminder of our responsibility to protect the environment and reconsider our relationship with nature.
