Gabrielle Thomas
About the Artist
Gabrielle Thomas is a photographer living and working in London. She recently completed a MA in Commercial Photography at the University of Arts London. Some of her past projects and clients include Burberry, Hearst, the BAFTAs, GQ, and the BRIT Awards and more. One of Thomas' most cherished projects was her work for Maharlika, a creative organisation dedicated to celebrating Filipino-British artists. This project resonated deeply with her, as it aligned with her commitment to highlighting the power of community, solidarity, and cultural representation through her lens.
Thomas’ ‘Inside Out’ series explores the complex interplay of contemporary identity: the blending of cultural heritage and modern life. Each subject is simultaneously depicted in their dual identity, both as Londoners in their everyday lives and as individuals connected to their cultural heritage. By juxtaposing contemporary portraits with traditional attire, Thomas highlights the duality of her subjects' experiences. The obscured inner image symbolizes the suppression of cultural heritage in the pursuit of societal acceptance. By exploring the dual identity of individuals, Thomas' work highlights the rich tapestry of cultures that make up London and the world. As fashion continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how designers and individuals continue to celebrate their cultural heritage while embracing the diversity of the modern world.
